Take a look at an external article about increasing up to 5% of the value of your home with a wood burner

Following successful expansion we now provide all our services in the following areas:

The areas covered are:

Watford

Barnet

Harringay

Stoke Newington

Walthamstow

Stratford

Woodford

Barking

Illford

Romford

Chigwell

So, you've got the wood burner installed - but then what!! - take a look at a video explaining how to light the fire (This is an external video or which we are not responsible for any resulting damage) - if in any doubt, give us a call and we can come out and check the burner and chimney.

Appliances

Although, over the years, I have installed most appliances, for practical reasons, I tend to restrict myself to multi-fuel stoves and wood-burners.

An installation will usually take between 4 and 5 hours. The process is not at all messy and requires only the tools and equipment we provide. Generally, the customer finds and purchases the appliance independently (though, of course, we are happy to advise). You may want to look at our Links section

If you are thinking of having an appliance fitted, you might want to consider the following:

Open Fires

Closed Appliances

If the flue of a chimney is in regular use, soot will build up in the flu and, over time, increase the risk of a chimney fire. If there is no appliance in place, there is also the possibility that soot will fall into the living space.

Chimneys are easily blocked and, particularly with gas fires, the risks posed are serious. If the fumes are unable to escape through the chimney, carbon monoxide, a lethal gas, will build up in the room.

Even relatively small obstructions can inhibit the draw. For instance, some chimneys are prone to collecting cobwebs, which support layers of dust and debris. Chimneys without cowls often attract birds and squirrels – the nests they build are also a fire hazard. Occasionally, seeds dropped by birds or deposited by the wind will begin to grow in a chimney; this can result in damage to the brickwork.

Some chimneys have stainless-steel liners, which break down with age and need to be replaced. Typically, they will last 12 to 15 years, assuming the chimney is in use, and provided the right appliance is fitted to the correct liner.

Often, if changes have been made, some parts of the chimney will be incompatible with others. For example, if a gas fire is replaced with a wood-burner, it is likely that the old flu-liner will be unable to cope with the increased temperatures and the sulphurous chemicals in the soot. Also, the cowl will need better ventilation because the appliance will produce heavy, sulphurous smoke, rather than steam. Occasionally, gasfitters don’t even notice that the chimney has been capped. Thus, before a new appliance is installed, it is important for a professional to inspect the chimney and issue a full-safety certificate.

If you make a claim based on a chimney-related problem, insurance providers will almost certainly want to see an in-date certificate.
